Every day we travel further into the world of Wi-Fi 6, the new wireless internet protocol that offers better battery life for your devices, less bandwidth congestion and most importantly: faster speeds. If you haven’t updated your router for a while, it’s probably not Wi-Fi 6-compliant. If you want to future-proof your internet for years to come, while also making your home browsing experience even better, snag one of these deals and make a system upgrade.
When considering a new Wi-Fi router to add to your modem, determine if a dual-band or a tri-band router is going to support all your devices. Dual-band is usually enough for home use, though if you’re doing a lot of simultaneous streaming and gaming, a tri-band will be of use. In places where there are a lot of devices connecting to the system (in a workplace or an office, for example), it’s probably also worth stepping up to the tri-band.
Wi-Fi 6 is the modern standard for wireless signal, though Wi-Fi 5 is still plenty effective in a pinch (Wi-Fi 6E is on the way). It offers better bandwidth and swifter download/upload speeds. If you’re adding a mesh system, make sure your preferred system’s coverage area will extend everywhere you need it to be and that you’ve got places in mind for the multiple devices it takes to get the signal there.
For an inexpensive, simple Wi-Fi solution, this TP-Link device ticks the basic boxes. The dual bands get you speeds up to 1750Mbps, three antennas get you a decent range, the onboard USB media server option is nice to have, and TP-Link’s Tether app makes for quick and simple setup. This older device lacks Wi-Fi 6, however, so if you need that for your newer devices, go with a more recent model.
For an apartment or a smaller house without a ton of devices that need to connect, this dual-band Netgear device gives you the best basics of a Wi-Fi router at a reasonable price. You’ll get speeds of up to 1750Mbps, four Ethernet plugins, and a USB connection for a wireless printer or a shared hard drive, but you’ll need to upgrade if you want Wi-Fi 6.
For an extra few dollars compared to the AC1750, this better-than-basic TP-Link device adds an antenna for additional range and offers Wi-Fi 6 at about the same overall speed. With savings of over $50 while on sale, it’s probably worth the added expense.
Jump up to a tri-band system and open up the lanes on your wireless highways as this Archer offers over 1.6Gbps on each of the 5GHz bands, plus another 750Mbps on the 2.4GHz side. The onboard RangeBoost tech pushes your signal further than the average, and connecting via Ethernet gets you gigabit speeds, which could make up for the lack of Wi-Fi 6 support.
Pitched for a gaming audience looking for low ping times and minimal lag, this dual-band device offers geo-filtering to find the closest servers and VPN connection support for network privacy. Regular non-gaming users will be perfectly happy with the speeds of up to 2.6Gbps and the USB 3.0 ports for adding peripherals like a wireless printer.
If the Nighthawk isn't quite enough for you, this tri-band router lets you dedicate a single 5GHz channel just for gaming while giving you another 5GHz and a 2.4GHz channel for media streaming and other devices. If that’s too much to concern yourself with, the SmartConnect feature will find the right band for the job. If you like this device but need Wi-Fi 6, there’s an updated version of it, though without the $80 in savings you get with this one.
For the money, you’d expect this router to be screaming fast, and indeed it is: up to 5.4Gbps with support for fiber optic cable and Wi-Fi 6 connections. Twenty-five devices can get signal across 2,500 square feet with four antennas and four Ethernet ports. Little extras like guest Wi-Fi channels and Alexa or Google Assistant voice control are also nice to have at this price.
If you’re going to take a step into mesh systems, why not start with the trusted products from Google Nest? This system covers a respectable 4,400 square feet with just two units, and the dual-band system can handle hundreds of devices. If you’ve already got the Home app on your phone or a Nest product in your house, you know how quick and simple the setup can be; you’ll also get options to control content or connectivity time for the kids. And if you ever move to a place where you need more space, you can add another router to the system.
This Eero system gives you roughly the same specs for less than the price of the similar Nest and Netgear mesh systems also on sale: You get three devices (a router and two extenders) for a nice large coverage area (5,000 square feet) and support for 75 devices. It’s a dual-band connection that supports Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and if you have a lot of Alexa-connected devices, the router also serves as a Zigbee smart home hub.
If your signal isn’t getting to all parts of your house or business, a simple step up to a Wi-Fi mesh system is what you get with this threesome of devices. This dual-band system gives you three signals on one network for seamless Wi-Fi connections across a 5,500-square-foot range. Need more coverage? Just buy another unit and add it to the mesh; the Deco app makes for easy setup.
The M5 offers most of the same features that the S4 has onboard: 5,500 square foot range, three dual-band devices, and two Ethernet ports on each device, and no Wi-Fi 6 support. Though the much smaller profile of each device may make it a better and more stylish fit for your home (and the onboard antivirus scanning software is a nice extra).
This Orbi setup offers nearly the same amount of range as the Deco, but with just two devices—a router and a satellite—versus the three devices it takes the Deco systems to cover 500 more square feet. Adding the tri-band signal and Wi-Fi 6 probably makes it worth the added expense, especially with $120 in savings.
