“Encanto” is the odds on favorite to take the Oscar for Animated Feature, but the voting members of the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, ASIFA-Hollywood, had other ideas. The animators’ organization handed out their 2022 Annie Awards on Saturday night and the big winner was “The Mitchells vs. The Machines.” The Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix release took eight awards including Best Feature, Directing – Feature and Writing – Feature.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” still took three awards for Music, Character Animation and Storyboarding. “Flee,” the first film to be Oscar-nominated in the Documentary, International, and Animation categories, took home the Independent Feature award. The other two Academy Award nominees, “Luca” and “Raya the Last Dragon,” were both shut out.

Netflix’s “Arcane” dominated the entire ceremony winning nine awards on the television side.
